Real payout ranges for Atlanta, what junkyards actually pay versus what a buyer pays, and the six factors that decide your number. No guessing, no bait quotes.
Most junk cars in metro Atlanta sell for $200 to $1,500. The range is wide because two very different things are being priced: the scrap value of the metal, and the resale value of the parts still bolted to it.
These are the ranges we pay, by vehicle type. A quote can land anywhere inside a range, but the category tells you where to expect to sit.
| Vehicle type | Typical payout | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Compact or mid-size sedan | $250 – $800 | Around 1.4 tons; common engines, steady parts demand |
| Full-size sedan | $300 – $900 | Heavier body, larger engine block |
| Small SUV or crossover | $300 – $1,200 | More mass, modern electronics add parts value |
| Full-size SUV | $450 – $2,200 | Heavy body on a truck platform |
| Pickup truck | $500 – $2,500 | Highest weight plus strong parts demand |
| Cargo or passenger van | $400 – $1,800 | Very heavy, mostly sheet steel |
| Late model, recent failure | $1,500 – $3,000+ | Valuable parts, alloy wheels, intact electronics |
| Stripped shell, no engine | $100 – $400 | Scrap weight only |
If your car is not listed, the rule of thumb is: heavier and more complete pays more. A 2005 pickup with a blown engine routinely outsells a 2012 sedan that still runs.
| Factor | Impact | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Highest | Scrap is priced by the ton, so mass is the floor under every offer |
| Completeness | Highest | Engine, transmission, converter, and wheels present means real money |
| Year and model | High | Newer cars carry parts still in demand; some models hold value for decades |
| Condition | Medium | Cosmetic damage barely matters; structural damage and missing parts do |
| Title status | Low–medium | Clean title is simplest; missing paperwork is workable but slightly lower |
| Metal market timing | Low–medium | Scrap prices move monthly; a $30/ton swing changes a sedan by ~$45 |
Notice what is not on the list: whether the car starts. Running condition barely affects a junk offer, because the buyer is pricing metal and parts rather than a working vehicle. That is why a dead car often pays close to a running one of the same weight.
This is where most sellers lose money. Scrap value and junk car value are not the same thing, and knowing both stops you accepting the lower one.
| Scrap value | Whole-car value | |
|---|---|---|
| What is priced | Metal by weight only | Metal plus every reusable part |
| Typical sedan | $200 – $400 | $250 – $800 |
| Typical pickup | $350 – $600 | $500 – $2,500 |
| What is deducted | Fluids, tyres, missing parts | Nothing — towing included |
| Who pays it | Scrap yard, by the ton | Junk car buyer, by the vehicle |
A scrap yard pays you for metal and then charges to drain fluids and remove tyres. A junk car buyer pays for the whole vehicle and includes towing. On a complete car the difference is routinely $200 to $800 in your favour.
Rule of thumb: scrap is the floor, not the price. If a quote matches scrap weight exactly on a complete car, you are being offered the metal and giving away the parts for free.
Both are legitimate, and they serve different situations.
For most sellers in Atlanta, the buyer route nets more after transport and fluid disposal are counted. It is also the only route that works for a car that cannot be driven to a yard.
Ranges are useful; a quote is better. We can price a vehicle in about two minutes if you have five details ready:
With those, the offer is firm rather than indicative. Photos help on damaged or unusual vehicles, but they are rarely required.
Run this comparison before deciding:
| Situation | Better route |
|---|---|
| Repair cost exceeds the car's value | Sell as junk — you avoid the repair and recover parts value |
| Car cannot be driven to a yard | Sell to a buyer — towing is included |
| You have transport and tools | Scrap yard may work, but compare both offers |
| Car is complete and in demand | Sell whole — parts value is real money |
| Engine and transmission already gone | Scrap weight is the honest ceiling |
